The West End Seniors’ Network (WESN) supports a fabulous benevolent reserve called Jane’s Fund. WESN is a registered charity, donations can be specified for Jane's Fund, and tax receipts are provided.

There are several very generous donors, including St.Andrews Wesley United Church.

This fund was established two years ago, succeeding the Seniors in Need Fund. It is named after a longtime board member and community activist who only wants to be known just as Jane.

Jane’s Fund provides financial assistance to local seniors for essential needs that are beyond the individual’s means. The West End has the second-lowest average income in Vancouver, second only to the Downtown Eastside. The last census shows that the West End has a high number of seniors living alone. This makes them a vulnerable group due to potential social isolation and economic insecurity. Should a long-time senior resident lose their apartment, we know in these inflated times that finding another apartment will be beyond their means.

Jane’s Fund helps keep seniors in their rental apartments by supporting emergency needs.

Applicants to the fund should be at least 55 years of age, reside in the West End, Yaletown or Coal Harbour, have an annual income of $29,000 or less, and not be a property owner. The previous tax year’s statement is required, and three months of bank statements.

There are no hard and fast rules concerning what Jane’s Fund will cover. Each situation is taken at its value.

The average amount awarded to an individual is $500, but there is flexibility. Expensive and necessary dentures, for instance, may increase the amount. Eyeglasses are also important, and frequently seniors are unable to afford them. Sometimes seniors can pay part of the bills for dentures and glasses , but are unable to afford the balance. Jane's Fund will evaluate expenses not covered by the Federal Dental Plan.

There are many ways the fund can help a person in need. Perhaps a cleaning or decluttering service to protect the senior’s tenancy, funds for food or short-term prescriptions, etc. The application process is very private, and seniors do not need to feel embarrassed or ashamed.

Applications are made at Kay’s Place in Denman Mall. Two staff members, Susan and Deborah, evaluate the applications. All information provided is kept in complete confidence.
