The Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival kicks off the season with Cherry Jam Downtown, a noon-hour concert in the downtown core featuring local talent and memorable performances.

Come soak in the festive atmosphere with local performances and readings of the 2018 Haiku Invitational winning poems, all under Burrard SkyTrain Station’s famed cherry blossom canopy.

The performance schedule includes Zimbamoto, lays down mesmerizing and energetic grooves coming out of Zimbabwe; Vancouver’s celebrated Katari Taiko; NoriNori & Kage performing with traditional Japanese three-string shanisen and taiko drum;, and MNGW  [pronounced Ming-wah] blending elements of salsa, psych rock, reggae, and hip hop.

The Park Pub at English Bay, in the Best Western Sands Hotel, launches a new monthly entertainment feature, Comedy in the Park featuring three stand up comedians. The first show has headliner Efthimios Nasiopoulos with a stellar lineup including Patrick Maliha (Gentlemen Hecklers, Comedy NOW) and Sophie Buddle (This hour has 22 minutes).

Efthimios is coming off a run at JFL Northwest, where he opened for Bryan Callen and Will Sasso at the Vogue Theatre. Whether talking about his dysfunctional family or politics, his acerbic wit and captivating storytelling will keep you laughing. His critically acclaimed, one man show, Disengaged toured across Canada. Do not miss this great lineup of comedic talent.

Back for a sixth year, Giggles & Gags is jam-packed with hilarity, satires of our West Coast culture, sketches covering the silly to the surreal, and a few magical and musical interludes along the way. And, as Mark Twain almost said, if one sketch doesn’t tickle your fancy, just wait five minutes!

Net proceeds go to Vancouver's Backpack Buddies, an organization that provides backpacks of food and snacks to children who are part of school hot meal programs. The goal is to help ensure these children don't go hungry on the weekend. That's right, you'll be generating good karma with every laugh.

Classical Concert Series presents Love in Spring featuring mezzo-soprano Martina Govednik, pianist Roger Parton, and flutist Dragana Hadjuk. After our long winter, mezzo-soprano Martina Govednik, with her vibrant, lush sound and her sheer kinetic energy will really let the musical sunshine in with a program featuring Bizet, Debussy, and Schubert as well as Govednik’s signature Serbian folksongs.

Mal and Cara is a fun theatrical comedy running at the Pal Theatre, April 18-28. A 40-something married Vancouver couple is coasting along on auto pilot in their typical Vancouver life, until one of them announces they want to make a radical career change that has broad-ranging ramifications.

Mal and Cara was written by Clive Scarff, Clive, a freelance writer/director based in West Vancouver whose recent theatrical works includes directing Dracula for Deep Cove Stage, and two successful runs of his play about online dating, You’ve Got Male.

Every Sunday afternoon the folks at the historic St. Andrew’s-Wesley Church at Burrard and Nelson present the finest jazz musicians in the Lower Mainland in an afternoon performance where jazz meets, and dances, with the spirit. The April lineup includes: Sarah Kennedy and Friends on the 7th; Trevor Whittridge on the 14th; Dee Daniels on the 21st; and the Henry Young Quartet on the 28th.

JAZZ ON THE BAY

Every Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday the Sylvia Hotel (1154 Gilford) presents an evening of live jazz in their lounge overlooking English Bay. The March lineup will be posted here as soon as available.

Jim Foster is at The Sylvia for Jazz on the Bay on April 17.

The lineup for April includes:

Wednesdays (8 - 10 p.m.): Taylor James with all the 70s favourites on the 3rd; The Hot Mammas with classic harmonies on the 10th; Jim Foster with acoustic blues and folk on the 17th; and Harris & DeBray with roots and blues on the 24th.

Thursdays (8 - 10 p.m.): Jazz/pop trio Blue Bird Day on the 4th; rootsy Blues and Jazz with the Bruce Gerrish Band on the 11th; the New Shackletons on the 18th; and acoustic R&B with the Krystle Dos Santos Duo on the 25th.

Sundays (7 - 9 p.m.): The Weaver / Werth Band with jazz and blues on the 7th; Angela Verbrugge with jazz and vintage pop on the 14th; swing, jazz and R&B with The Blue Velvet Duo on the 21st; and jazz duo Ryley and Kaylar on the 28th.

And Sundays feature a Prime Rib special!

Showtime is ??Samba Fusion is a Vancouver based Dance Company, whose roots are based in Brazilian Samba, fused with numerous dance styles, music and rhythms.
