Community Calendar

THE BARBIE BRUNCH
A Pink Barbie Themed Extravaganza

When: Saturday & Sunday, Oct. 21 & 22, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: Mary’s On Davie
Cost: $58. Tickets here.
Details: Two days of entertainment nostalgia, and endless Barbie-inspired fun. A magical Barbie experience like no other!

HALLOWEEN PARTY

When: Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 3 to 9 p.m.
Where: Gordon Neighbourhood House
Cost: Free
Details: A fun for all ages party featuring spooky fun, live music, a dog costume contest at 5 p.m. and a “Hocus Pocus” screening at 7 p.m.

COMMUNITY LUNCH

When: Mondays and Fridays at 12 noon.
Where: Gordon Neighbourhood House (GNH)
Cost: $7 with a GNH membership, $8 without. Children 1 and up are half-price.

WEST END URBAN GARDEN CLUB
Countertop Kitchen Gardens

When: Sunday, Oct. 15 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Where: West End Community Centre Meeting Room 2.
Cost: Free
Details: Join the West End Neighbourhood Food Network’s Urban Garden Club and Village Vancouver at their monthly, family friendly, gathering. Each month features a short presentation or discussion on a different food or gardening related topic. This month will be all about countertop kitchen gardens. The community seed bank will be on hand for you to pick up some free seeds or swap or donate seeds. Children of any age are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult.

EMERGENCY FIRST AID & CPR/AED
Be Prepared!

When: Saturday, Oct. 14 from 9:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.
Where: West End Community Centre Barclay Room
Cost: $99.75
Details: A basic First Aid course offering lifesaving first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills for the workplace or home. The course meets legislation requirements for provincial worker safety and insurance boards and includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines.

INVESTMENT COFFEE CLUB

When: Sunday, Oct. 15 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

An informal gathering to discuss current events, the economy, and investing.

  • TOASTMASTERS: Tuesdays, Sept. 12 through Dec. 12 from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. in the West End Community Centre Bidwell Room. Free. Learn and practice public speaking, impromptu speeches, and leadership skills at this weekly meeting.

  • ENGLISH CONVERSATION CIRCLE: Tuesdays, Sept. 12 - Dec. 12 at the West End Community Centre Meeting Room 2. Free. Join a weekly conversation and drop in when you can to practice English in a relaxed circle of friendly people. Conversations are guided by experienced facilitators who strive to talk about things that interest you.

  • WEST END WRITERS: Wednesdays, Sept. 13 through Dec. 13 from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. Free. Writers Club of all ages and experience are invited to join in reading works-in-progress and receiving feedback. Visit here for more information.

  • CRIBBAGE: Fridays from Sept. 15 through Dec. 15 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the West End Community Centre Bidwell Room. Free. A friendly social card group sharing a fun game. Beginners and newcomers welcome. The Dec. 1 class will be in the English Bay Room.

  • LABYRINTH - A WALKING MEDITATION: Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at St. Paul’s Anglican Church Hall. Free. The Labyrinth is a full 13-metre replica of the medieval labyrinth laid in the stone floor of the 13th-century Cathédrale de Notre-Dame de Chartres. The Labyrinth at St. Paul’s is open for silent walking, prayer and meditation to people of all faiths and spiritual disciplines as a resource for meditation, reflection, and prayer.

  • WATERFRONT WALKERS: Saturdays Sept. 9 to Dec. 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Free. A spontaneous group of walking enthusiasts who meet weekly to enjoy a variety of scenic walks. Routes are regularly around 6km and last about three hours, with a stop along the way for coffee. Meet up at Coal Harbour Community Centre.

  • THE DARK SECRETS OF STANLEY PARK: Saturdays from 4 to 5:30 or 6 p.m. $32 adults and $29 youth and seniors. Information and tickets here. Discover the jaw-dropping beauty – and sinister stories – of Stanley Park. Behind those majestic forests, picturesque gardens, and stunning beaches lies a history of forced evictions, buried treasure, shocking crime scenes, and the macabre tale of Deadman’s Island. When you buy a ticket for this walking tour, two percent of the ticket cost goes to support the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.

  • THE REALLY GAY HISTORY TOUR: Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. $32 adults and
    $29 youth and seniors. Information and tickets here. It’s time for Vancouver’s secrets to come out of the closet. Tour guide Glenn Tkach tells the stories of drag kings and two spirit warriors, queer church ministers ,and transgender crime fighters. This two-hour walking tour is a celebration of the unsung heroes who forever changed the social fabric of our city. 

Arts & Entertainment

Jay Brazeau opens the Have A Senior Moment Festival with a new play, Fortunate Sons.

HAVE A SENIOR MOMENT FESTIVAL
New Works by Emerging Senior Playwrights

When: Thursday - Saturday, Oct. 5, 6, & 7 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: PAL Studio Theatre
Cost: $15 per play reading or $30 for a three-play package. Tickets here.
Details: Western Gold Theatre presents the inaugural Have A Senior Moment Festival, featuring three new plays by Vancouver senior artists whose works will be read by some of Vancouver’s favourite actors. Artistic Director Tanja Dixon-Warren wanted to “turn the notion of ‘have a senior moment’ on its head, changing the p4rception of seniors ‘having a moment’ while giving senior artists a moment of their own.

The three plays will be:

  • Thursday, Oct. 5: Fortunate Sons, by Jay Brazeau, a roller-coaster ride that follows four generations of fathers and sons from 1937 to beyond.

  • Friday, Oct. 6: They’re Naked, They’re Ugly, and They Owe Us Money, by Susinn McFarlen. A feminist comedy about a theatre company forced to rehearse in a decrepit biker clubhouse. A love letter to an art form that is struggling but refuses to die. It’s funny, it’s angry, it’s theatre!

  • Saturday, Oct. 7: The Monarch, by Michael Vairo. In a dingy old boxing club in the basement of a rundown hotel an old boxer and his one-time prodigy search for meaning in their lives and contemplate what could have been. Facing old age, eviction, and a slow slide into dementia, one man decides that it is not too late to sing his song in life and, with the help of his daughter, chooses to follow his dream.

PAINT NIGHT WORKSHOP
An Art From The Heart Event

When: October 5, 11, 18, 20, 25 & 31.
Where: 505 Burrard (Bentall Tower 1, Lower Mall)
Cost: $60 / Information and registration here.
Details: Prepare to get creative and step outside your comfort zone in a curated paining workshop. Registration fee includes a 16” x 20” canvas, paint, brushes, pallet, and smock.

LIFE STORIES PAINTING WORKSHOP
Share Your Story Through Art

When: Friday, Oct. 13 from 5 to 6 p.m.
Where: Gordon Neighbourhood House.
Cost: Free
Details: Part of the Canada-wide Culture Days celebration, this painting workshop, led by BC Culture Days Ambassador Peisen Ding, is open to all ages. Peisen, a visual artist and art educator, will share his own life expereine as an immigrant and encourage participants to share their own stories of travel, life stage transitions, etc. He will also show tools and techniwues for participants to portray their own experiences. Materials will be provided. The workshop will be hosted in English, but the artist can also communicate in Mandarin.

JAZZ IN THE PARLOUR

Details: An evening concert in the Roedde House’s gorgeous Victorian parlour with the music of Steve Smith (bass), Andrew Skepasts (guitar), and Nick Bracewell (drums), playing some jazz favourites. The event includes a 30-minute intermission where tea and cookies will be available.

  • THE WEST END SINGERS: Wednesdays in the Salons at St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church from 7 to 9 p.m. No auditions, it’s just for fun! Currently they're learning tunes by/from Styx, Cold Play, John Lennon, Les Miserables, La La Land, and others.

  • LUNCHTIME CONCERTS: Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Wesley United Church. By donation. Bring your bagged lunch and treat yourself to some of Vancouver’s best musical offerings featuring classical, gospel, jazz, folk and more with Dawn Pemberton, Corey Hamm, and Katherine Evans.

  • COMEDY TONIGHT! Thursdays at 8 p.m. at The Park Pub (1755 Davie). Admission $25. Hosts TheatreSports alumni Denise Jones and David Milchard hold an improv comedy night featuring a rotating cast of up to eight of Vancouver’s top improv artists plus special guests.

  • IMPROV THURSDAYS: From 8 to 9:30 p.m. at The Park Pub. Admission $25. Award-winning actors, improv veterans, and Theatre Sports alumni Denise Jones and David Milchard bring their new improv comedy troupe to the West End.

THANKSGIVING & HALLOWEEN CRAFT TIMES
Family Fun For the Fall Season

Details: Celebrate these two autumnal highlights and your child will go home with a beautiful and unique craft they’ve made themselves.

PARENTS NIGHT OUT
For parents of 5 to 12 year-olds

When: Wednesday, October 4 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Coal Harbour Community Centre
Cost: $25.
Details: Enjoy a night out to yourself while the kids enjoy games, arts and crafts. Bring a dinner for the kids.

HAUNTED HOUSE AT BARCLAY MANOR
Recommended for 8yrs & Up

When: Friday, Oct. 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. & Saturday, Oct. 28 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Where: Barclay Manor
Cost: $4 per person or $12 for a family of four.
Details: For bigger, braver souls Barclay Manor will be converted into a spooky, scary house. Come and enjoy, if you dare! It takes about five to ten minutes to make your way through the house’s maze of shocks and surprises. Tickets in person at the West End and Coal Harbour Community Centres, or at the door. The last entry is ten minutes before closing.

HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL & GHOSTLY GRAVEYARD
Suitable for 2 to 7 year-olds

When: Saturday, Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon
Where: Coal Harbour Community Centre Gymnasium.
Cost: $7 per child advance at the Community Centre / $9 on the day of, space permitting.
Details: Join in a hair-raising event and get into the spooky spirit of the season. There will be creepy crafts, terrifying treats, and eerie entertainment. Don’t forget to wear your costume. Parent participation is required and pre-registration is recommended.

RED CROSS BABYSITTING

When: Sun. Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: West End Community Centre Barclay Room
Cost: $75
Details: A nationally recognized program designed to help youth develop self-assurance, knowledge, and skills required for babysitting duties and when caring for themselves alone.

PLAYTIME!

When: Monday through Saturday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. except Wednesdays which are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 22.
Where: The West End Community Centre Auditorium
Admission: $3.50 drop-in per child. Registration required.
Details: Your child will love running, tumbling, riding bikes and cars, and making new friends. Parents are requested to help with set-up and take-down of play equipment.

YOUTH MOVIE NIGHT

When: Thursday, Oct. 19 from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m.

Details:
Open to all ages 13 to 18, with popcorn and movie snacks provided. Pre-registration is encouraged but youth are welcome to register the day of at the front desk.

Cost: Before Care (8 to 9:30 a.m.) $8 / Camp (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) $35 / After Care (3:30 to 5:30 p.m.) $10.
Details: While the teacher’s away (on Professional Development Day) the kids will play! An action-packed day of exciting activities, crafts, and games. Parents must complete a waiver form.

PARENTS LUNCH OUT
For parents of 5 to 12 year-olds

When: Saturday, Oct. 21 from 12 noon to 3 p.m.
Where: The West End Community Centre Bidwell Room
Cost: $25
Details: Drop your kids off at the community centre and enjoy lunch to yourself. Staff will lead the children in games, arts and crafts, and more for an exciting, fun time. Please bring lunch!

PINT-SIZED PUMPKIN CARVING

When: Wednesday, Oct. 25 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Where: Coal Harbour Community Centre Multipurpose Room
Cost: $7 per pumpkin with advance registration / $8 at the door, space permitting.
Details: Get into the spooky season spirit as your child cares their own jack-o-lantern. Pumpkins, carving tools, and ghoulish music provided — and don’t forget to wear your costume, if you dare! Please pre-register to ensure their are enough pumpkins on hand.

  • FAMILY STORY TIME: Thursdays from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at Joe Fortes Library. Free. This program for parents and caregivers with young children shares songs, rhymes and stories. Suitable for children of all ages and abilities to enjoy and learn together.

  • JR. YOUTH LEADERSHIP CLUB: Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 14 through June 13. West End Community Centre Meeting Room 1. Free. Youth in grades 10 to 12 gain leadership and mentoring experience while learning how to organize, plan, and implement programs in the community centre. They also learn valuable skills such as interview preparation, applying to college and university, and how to apply for scholarships and bursaries.   • PRE-TEEN NIGHT AT WECC (ages 9 - 12): Fridays at the West End Community Centre auditorium from 6:15 to 8:45 p.m. through Dec. 15. No sessions Oct 27 and Dec. 1. Free. Youngsters participate in a variety of games, crafts, and activities including dodgeball, button and bracelet making, movie nights, and more. Maximum participation is 30 kids and registration is required.

  • TEEN NIGHT AT COAL HARBOUR: Fridays Sept. 15 through Dec. 15 from 6:15 to 9 p.m. at Coal Harbour Community Centre. A free program for youths in Grades 8 to 12 (ages 13 to 18). Shoot hoops in the gymnasium, play board games upstairs, or get creative with some art supplies. Snacks provided. Teen Night has in-out privileges.

  • SINGLE MOTHERS CONNECTION GROUP: Fridays at Gordon Neighbourhood House from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Free to GNH members — annual membership is $5 and can be purchased at the front counter upon arrival. This program is dedicated to expanding a support system for single mothers in the West End through peer support and building meaningful relationships. As a part of the group, toddler playtimes are aimed at promoting healthy socialization and development of kids ages 0-5. The group also holds monthly workshops, employment support sessions, and community events. To register email familyplace@gordonhouse.org.

Senior Moments

SENIORS FIRST B.C. LAW CLINIC

Where: Kay’s Place in Denman Mall
When: The first Wednesday of every month.
Details: As part of its Satellite Elder Law Clinic program, Seniors First B.C. partners with the West End Seniors’ Network to offer pro bono legal consultations to eligible older adults.

Bob Kozak will entertain at the Barclay Manor Oktoberfest celebration.

OKTOBERFEST AT BARCLAY MANOR

When: Wednesday, Oct. 11 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Join the West End Seniors’ Network (WESN) German Conversation group and Vancouver Friends for Life in celebrating the harvest season. Enjoy grilled Oktoberfest sausaages and refreshing Parallel 49 beer or soft drinks, all for $5. Sing along with the talented Barclay Bards, Sylvia, and the spirited Octoberfest singer Bob Kozak as they perform your favourite Octoberfest tunes. There will also be an open mic session inviting everyone to share some laughter and talent, and every attendee will have the chance to win tickets for the thrilling Ghostly Vancouver Tour.

LATIN HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATION

Come together with the WESN Spanish Conversation group and the Vancouver Latin Cultural Centre to commemorate Latin Heritage Month in style. Enjoy mouthwatering Latin treats and beverages provided by Mi Tierra Latina, take part in a thrilling game of Loterria, sing along with performers Carla and Toto, and dance the afternoon away!

SENIORS FLU CLINIC

When: Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 4:15
Where: Kay’s Place in Denman Mall

Details: Flu season is upon us and one excellent way to protect yourself and everyone around you is to receive your flu shot. A pharmacist from The Pharmacy West End will be providing the vaccine and will be able to answer any questions you have. First come, first served.

  • FITNESS WITH LAUREN: Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at Gordon Neighbourhood House. Free. A weekly fitness class that incorporates resistance band exercises to improve muscle tone and strength. All seniors welcome.

  • BALLROOM DANCING & SOCIAL: Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m. in the West End Community Centre Auditorium. Join a friendly group of ballroom dances and learn, practice, and meet new friends. Singles and those with partners both welcome. Drop-in $1.50 / Eight sessions for $7.60.

  • YOGA FOR SENIORS: Mondays at 12:15 p.m. at the West End Community Centre Dance Studio. A class for older men and women at all fitness levels, including those with some physical challenges. Each class provides a balanced full body workout, adapted to safely meet your needs. $11 drop-in.

  • CREATIVE QUEST: Thursdays from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at Barclay Manor. The Barclay Manor Artists’ Collective meets for open studio time.   • TED TALKS & DISCUSSION: Thursdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Barclay Manor. A lively gathering for informative talks and ensuing discussions. October topics include: Oct. 5 - A powerful new neurotech tool for augmenting your mind, How humans and AI can work together to create better businesses, and How live on earth adapts to you and me; Oct. 12 - The fascinating physics of insect pee, War, AI, and the new global arms race, and The story of ‘Oumuamua, the first visitor from another star system; Oct. 19 - You don’t actually know what your future self wants, “A Seat At The Table” isn’t the solution for gender equity, and We can make COVID-19 the last pandemic; Oct. 26 - How a “Hi Level” mindset helps you realize your potential, Stand with Ukraine in the fight against evil, and Is the pandemic actually over? Since 1990 this group has been providing mature gay and bisexual men with opportunities to come together for social, educational, cultural, and recreational programs and activities.
