Community Calendar

VANCOUVER PRIDE PARADE 

When: Sun., August 2 from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
Where: Pacific Avenue (Griffiths Way to Burrard).
Cost: Free.
Details: Vancouver Pride Parade will see over 100,000 attendees on Pride Weekend. Led by our Host Nations, with local community groups, non-profit organizations, businesses and more all showcasing their support for the 2SLGBTQAI+ communities. There will be 4 accessible viewing zones available to enjoy the colourful floats, lively marching bands, and community partner groups transform Vancouver into a beautiful display of love, music, and art. DAVIE VILLAGE PRIDE FESTIVAL

When: Sun., August 2 from 2 to 10 p.m. (Davie Street) / 2 to 9 p.m. (Nelson Park).
Where: Davie Street (Burrard to Jervis) and Nelson Park (Between Comox and Nelson at Thurlow).

Details: The ultimate street festival is back as the grand finale of Vancouver Pride Weekend with live music, drag, DJ’s, roaming performers, community vendors, and interactive experiences bringing the community together for a vibrant, all ages celebration of queer life, culture, and connection. FELTING FUN WITH AMY

CUBAN SOCIAL DANCE TUESDAYS

When: Tues., August 4, 11, 18, and 25 starting at 6:30 p.m.
Where: 1800 Davie Plaza.

Details: Join in on this free, drop-in dance social where everyone is welcome, whether you’re a seasoned dancer or stepping onto the dance floor for the first time, this event is all about having fun, meeting new people, and enjoying great music. The event is part of the West End Business Improvement Association (WEBIA) summer event series, for more information visit here.

MUSEUM AFTER DARK: A VICTORIAN PARLOUR SÉANCE

Where: Roedde House Museum.

Details: Roedde House Museum presents their first Museum After Dark event and an exciting collaboration with local actor, writer, director, and content creator, Jil Tolzmann. This event brings a thrilling evening of theatrical exploration in an 1893 restored Victorian home. Sip tea while hearing prophecies and have your own fortune read, discover common Victorian Era spiritual beliefs by interacting with a roving psychic character, or simply roam the halls of the museum and see what magic hides around each corner. Tickets are reserved in 30 minute time slots, for more information visit here.

SUMMER BERRIES AND EDIBLE PLANTS WALK

Where: 712 Lost Lagoon Path.

Details: Join this beginner-friendly plant walk to learn about the common berries and other plants found across our region, which ones are edible or otherwise useful, and tips on how to identify them. We'll learn about trailing blackberry, staghorn sumac, Oregon grape, and more! Note: No non-Indigenous harvesting or foraging is allowed in city parks, and this educational walk will not include any foraging or tasting. For more information and reservations, visit here.

JAZZ JAMS WITH THE HIPPONAUTS

When: Fri., August 7, 14, 21, and 28 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Where: Jim Deva Plaza.
Cost: Free.
Details: Come sign up and play with The Hipponauts at their weekly Open Jazz Jam, Friday nights at Jim Deva Plaza. The band is an instrumental jazz quartet who perform a mix of well-known jazz, blues, and latin tunes flavoured with the urban sounds of hip hop and neo soul for a refreshing modern fusion of groove. WEST END MURAL TOURS

Details: Come discover and connect with your local arts community through fun, welcoming, and engaging guided art walks and talks around the West End. VANCOUVER WATER FIGHT 

When: Sat., August 8 from 1 to 4 p.m.
Where: Lumberman's Arch, Stanley Park.
Cost: Free.
Details: Vancouver’s largest water fight is happening, and you don’t want to miss it. This is a free, unsanctioned event with no organizer, no tickets, and no instructions. Just show up near The Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park. You can use a water gun, a bucket, a water bottle, a plastic bag, or just your cupped hands. CLIMATE TALK: HOW DO WE IMPROVE VANCOUVER TRANSPORTATION

When: Sun., August 9 from 12 to 12:45 p.m.
Where: St. Andrew Wesley’s United.
Cost: Free.
Details: Join Denis Agar, founder of Movement, who is leading the drive to improve public transit with ideas like dedicated bus lanes on congested routes, low income transit passes, and new bus routes. For more information, visit here.

Sip, Paint, Love Summer Painting Series

AFRICAN DESCENT FESTIVAL

Details: The African Descent Festival is a celebration of African music, arts, and culture. LEARN YOUR FERNS BEGINNER PLANT WALK

Details Join the Stanley Park Ecology team for a beginner-friendly plant walk to learn some common ferns, trees, and other local plants on this late summer stroll in the forest! • COMMUNITY LUNCH: Mondays at 12 noon at Gordon Neighbourhood House. Cost is $7.50 with a GNH membership, $8 without. Children 1 and up are half-price. Join other members of our community for a delicious, three course, home-cooked lunch. No lunch Monday, August 3.

• ENGLISH CONVERSATION CIRCLE: Tuesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the West End Community Centre’s Meeting Room 2. Free. Join a weekly conversation and drop in where you can to practice English in a relaxed circle of friendly people. Conversations are guided by experienced facilitators who strive to talk about things that interest you. 

• TOASTMASTERS: Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the West End Community Centre’s Denman Room. Free. Learn and practice public speaking, impromptu speeches, and leadership skills at this weekly meeting.

• WEST END WRITERS: Wednesdays from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. at the West End Community Centre’s Meeting Room. Free. Writers of all ages and experience are invited to join in reading works-in-progress and receiving feedback. 

• SOCIAL LOUNGE: Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Meet your neighbours at the weekly Social Lounge at the West End Community Centre. Free and open to everyone to come enjoy coffee and tea and meet with old and new friends.

• YOGA AT SECOND BEACH: Thursdays at 6 p.m. at Ceperley Park at Second Beach in Stanley Park. Free. Join local West Ender, Sandy, for an all-levels flow Yoga every Thursday evening and connect with nature and neighbours.

• ESL CONVERSATION PRACTICE: Fridays from 10 to 11 a.m. at the West End Community Centre. Free. Meet new friends and practice your English conversation skills with other English language learners. This is a supportive and casual meet-up. Attendees must register for each session individually. Program returns January 23. To register, visit here.

• CRIBBAGE: Fridays from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the West End Community Centre’s Bidwell Room. Free. A friendly social card group sharing a fun game. Beginners and newcomers welcome. 

• HOT ONES WING NIGHT: Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lucifer’s House of Heat. Tickets are $25 per person. Put your spice tolerance to the test with a rotating selection of hot sauces from the hit YouTube series Hot Ones. Purchase tickets here.

• WATERFRONT WALKERS: Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Free. A casual group of walking enthusiasts who meet weekly to enjoy a variety of scenic walks. Routes are regularly around 6km and last about three hours, with a stop along the way for coffee. Meet up at Coal Harbour Community Centre. 

• MAHJONG: Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the West End Community Centre Meeting Room 2. Free. Dive into the captivating world of Mahjong, a strategic tile game. With every tile played, a new adventure unfolds. Whether you’re an experienced player, a newcomer, or a drop-in, all are welcome. 

• LABYRINTH - A WALKING MEDITATION: Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at St. Paul’s Anglican Church Hall. Free. The Labyrinth is a full 13-metre replica of the medieval labyrinth laid in the stone floor of the 13th-century Cathédrale de Notre-Dame de Chartres. The Labyrinth at St. Paul’s is open for silent walking, prayer, and meditation to people of all faiths and spiritual disciplines as a resource for meditation, reflection, and prayer. 

• DRUM CIRCLE WITH DRUM SOUL: Sundays from 2 to 3 p.m. drumming lessons, and drum circle from 3 to 5 p.m. at 1655 Barclay Street (side door by the gazebo). By donation. Join the drumming workshop, unleash your inner percussionist, learn exciting beats, and discover the joy of drumming. No experience needed, pre-register here.

VINES ARTS FESTIVAL

Details: Come celebrate music, dance, poetry, and visual art at this free event taking place at various locations downtown. Vines Arts Festival will be hosting two events in the West End during the 10-day event, including the Opening Ceremony taking place Wed., August 2 starting at 6 p.m. at Second Beach and We Are Everything event at Sunset Beach featuring music, drag performances, and more on Thurs., August 13 starting at 6 p.m. Vines is an arts organization and festival that is responsive to and nurturing of artists who are working toward land, water, and relational justice. SQUIRREL & CHIPMUNK CAMP

When: Weekly Sessions now until to August 28
Where: West End Community Centre.
Cost: $212 for 4 sessions, $265 for 5 sessions.
Details: The Squirrel and Chipmunk Camps are fun-filled, licensed programs that offer children (2019 & 2020 birth years) a chance to socialize while experiencing a variety of crafts, games, sports, science, and adventure activities. Campers will take out trips to water parks, beaches, fun playgrounds, and more. BABY JELLYFISH PLAYTIME

PRE-SCHOOL FUN WITH TOYS.

Details: Fun with toys, balls, and more for pre-school ages. Parents are required to help set up and clean up the equipment each day and parent participation is required.

FUN FOR TODDLERS AND PARENTS ALIKE AT GORDON HOUSE.

Details: Toddler Playtime is a family drop-in program that features a variety of activities that promote healthy child development such as free play with lots of toys available, arts and crafts, mini circle time with songs and stories at the end of the playtime. This program is for parents, family members, and caregivers with children 0-5 years old. Parenting resources and special events are offered monthly. • BABYTIME: Tuesdays from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. and 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. at Joe Fortes Library. Free. Rhymes, songs, fingerplays, and stories for parents and caregivers and their babies. Recommended for newborns to approximately 18 months. Baby time takes place in the English Bay Room on the 2nd floor of the West End Community Centre.

• TEEN OPEN GYM: Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Coal Harbour Community Centre Gymnasium. A free program for youth in grades 8 to 12 (ages 12 to 18) with badminton and volleyball on Tuesdays and badminton and basketball on Wednesdays. Non-instructional, with in-out privileges. 

• PARENT & TOT: Wednesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at St. Andrew’s United. Free. A safe place for newborns, toddlers, and preschoolers to play, explore, and socialize at the parent and tot drop-in. For more information, email j.cunnings@standrewswesley.com.

• FAMILY STORY TIME: Thursdays from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. and 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. at Joe Fortes Library in the Children’s Area. Free. This program for parents and caregivers with young children shares songs, rhymes, and stories. Suitable for children of all ages and abilities to enjoy and learn together. 

• WEST END YOUTH COUNCIL: Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the West End Community Centre Meeting Stanley Court Room. This program is designed for youth (grades 8 to 12) who are looking to gain leadership and mentoring experience while learning how to organize, plan, and implement programs in the community centre.

• KIDSZONE: Fridays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Free. At Joe Fortes Library. A time for kids to meet kids and share books, crafts, and fun activities at the library. For Grades K to 7. 

• PRE-TEEN NIGHT: Fridays 6:15 to 8:45 p.m. A free drop-in at the Coal Harbour Community Centre for youth ages nine to twelve. Drop by and participate in a variety of games, crafts, and activities including dodge-ball, capture the flag, button and bracelet making, movie nights, and more. Registration is required, with room for a maximum of 20 youths. 

• FRIDAY NIGHT OPEN GYM: Fridays from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. at Coal Harbour Community Centre Gymnasium. A free drop-in for Grades 8 to 12 (ages 13 to 18). Everyone is welcome, drop in, shoot hoops, bump balls, or swing a racquet. Come hang out, make memories, and be part of the fun!

• BALLROOM DANCING & SOCIAL: Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m. in the West End Community Centre Auditorium. Join a friendly group of ballroom dancers to learn, practice, and meet new friends. Singles and those with partners both welcome. Drop-in $1.50 / Eight sessions for $7.60.

• YOGA FOR SENIORS: Mondays at 12:15 p.m. at the West End Community Centre Dance Studio. A class for older men and women at all fitness levels, including those with some physical challenges. Each class provides a balanced full body workout, adapted to safely meet your needs. $11 drop-in.

• CREATIVE QUEST: Tuesdays from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at Barclay Manor. The Barclay Manor Artists’ Collective meets for open studio time. • CRAFTY NEIGHBOURS: Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. at Gordon Neighbourhood House. A weekly social gathering that connects knitting, crocheting, and sewing community members and other creative folks to share their talents. • SENIORS KARAOKE: Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Gordon Neighbourhood House. Bring out your inner singer at Seniors' Karaoke and choose from a variety of songs from classic hits to modern chart-toppers or choose to sing in your native language. Microphones and snacks provided. This is a drop-in program, free with Gordon House annual membership. Gordon House will be closed April 3.

• CRIBBAGE: Fridays from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the West End Community Centre / Bidwell Room. Free. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting out, with every card played and point pegged the charm and thrill never fades. Join in for good company, laughter, and the joy of a well-played hand. WALKING THROUGH PRIDE: VANCOUVER’S 2SLGBTQIA+ HISTORY

Tour guide Glenn Tkach tells the stories of drag kings and two spirit warriors, queer church ministers, and transgender crime fighters.
