Clubs To Join, Dates To Note, and Helpful Tips

Summer is coming to a close! Meaning there is an amazing yearly used book sale held at the Vancouver Public Library. While older students are frantically searching for last minute ways to spend their time, the new grade 8s are wondering about worthwhile clubs, important dates to write down, and some school related advice and pointers.

POPULAR CLUBS AT KG

KG is home to many clubs, in which students can build friendships, make change, and have a good time. However, as the start of school and clubs day is approaching, which ones are actually worth joining?

First, there is Interact club. Interact club is focused on fostering friendships and developing leadership skills, as well as discovering the power of “Service above Self.” Members fundraise, plan, and make real noticeable change in your community.

Second, Dungeons & Dragons club. D&D club is for roleplaying and rolling dice. Students make their own campaigns, fight monsters, and make friends. To top it all off, the teacher sponsor is a fan favourite, the community is great, people are nice and funny.

Finally, the Yearbook club. In Yearbook club students help design, source photos, create art, and determine the theme and the layout of the KG yearbook. This club is a big deal because prior to its creation, KG students didn't get yearbooks at all!

No matter what clubs students join, it's a great idea because of the friends, memories, and changes they make.

IMPORTANT DATES

As we start the 2026/27 school year, there are many noteworthy dates in September that you should make sure to write down.

There is a grade 8 meet ‘n greet on Thursday, September 3 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Parents and students will meet in the KG gym for welcome activities with KG leadership, and parents will receive a tour of the school. Please RSVP if your child is attending.

Students will be able to access their schedules via MyEd on Friday, September 4 at 3 p.m.

September 7 is Labour Day, so there is no school, meaning that Tuesday, September 8, is the first day of school.

On the first day of school, parents and guardians of grade 8 students meet in the KG cafeteria from 10 a.m. to 12 noon for an information session. During the same time, grade 8 students meet in the KG gym for welcome activities with KG leadership. Students will get their schedules, locker information, agenda books, paperwork, and forms in their Homeroom Class (Semester 1, Period 1 Class).

Students grade 9-12 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. will meet in their Homeroom Class and will receive their locker information, instructions on how to access schedules, paperwork, and forms.

September 21 is a Professional Development Day, so there is no school for students. September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, meaning school is closed.

It is also important to remember: There will be no FIT during the first week of school.

START OF TERM POINTERS

Many newer students want the start of their school year to be more seamless, and there are ways to achieve this and minimize panic.

Make sure you can log into MyEd to look at your Semester One courses, as checking them before the first day of school can prevent that first day stress.

Preparing stuff ahead of time such as a bag with school supplies, an outfit, or a lunch will save you time and prevent a rush.

After the long summer break students should try to rebuild a routine. Many students stay up very late during the summer months, and according to a study conducted by the Government of Canada, sleeping earlier is beneficial for the health of adolescents and school-aged children. Students should therefore try to sleep earlier, avoid caffeine before bed, and maintain a regular bedtime or night time routine, not only to improve health, but so they can come to school energized and ready to learn.

A LAST MINUTE SUMMER WONDER

There are many signs that summer is coming to a close: students' thoughts returning to their studies, temperatures beginning to chill, and the best of all, the end of summer annual book sale. The sale is taking place at the Vancouver Public Library’s (VPL’s) Central Branch, in the Alice MacKay room.

The event is organized by The Friends of the VPL, a community group of library lovers that volunteers, fundraises, and advocates in support of the VPL. The sale is taking place from August 28 to Sept 1st, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, they host many other events as well, so don’t stress if you can’t make it. They are selling lightly used books, CDs, and DVDs at prices that won't break the bank. This is an excellent idea for a last minute summer activity, especially if you are a student or enjoy books.
