LISTINGS A WORK IN PROGRESS:
The listings here are by no means complete. We will be adding to them on an ongoing basis and with each month’s issue of The West End Journal, you will find more developments listed and further details and updates on all of them. Thank you for your patience as we complete this resource. If you have any information about the history, controversies, or development details please contact us at editor@thewestendjournal.ca

WEST END STREET NAMES: Most of the West End streets were named by Lauchlan Alexander Hamilton (1852 - 1944) who was the CPR surveyor in the mid-1880s, who later served in the first Vancouver City Council, set up the tent that served as City Hall after the great fire, and who did an end-run around his CPR bosses by saving from developers what is now known as Stanley Park. He took as his sources the names of various geographical features of the BC coastline, most of which had been named by Captain George Vancouver and other European explorers of the west coast. You’ll find a story about each street name as you browse through this section. For much of this information, we acknowledge Tom Snyders’ and Jennifer O’Rourke’s book Namely Vancouver (Arsenal Pulp Press /2001) and Captain John Walbran’s British Columbia Coast Names (1909).
